Primary care providers in the Île-de-France region and the management of smoking among older adults
Introduction - In France, smoking rates are declining, with the exception of the 65–75 age group, where prevalence remains around 10%. It is one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality in this age group. This study explores the knowledge, attitudes, and practices of healthcare professionals in the Île-de-France region regarding tobacco use and smoking cessation among people over 65. Materials and Methods - This is a cross-sectional observational study conducted in 2019 using a questionnaire administered to 300 private-practice physicians, nurses, and pharmacists in the Île-de-France region. The analysis employs both univariate and multivariate approaches. Results - Knowledge varies by profession and age. Pharmacists scored the highest, with scores decreasing with age. These differences do not appear in the multivariate model. Attitudes differ significantly by profession. Pharmacists score higher, as do professionals who have completed training, men, and non-smokers or former smokers. The multivariate model confirms the differences based on profession and training completion. Practices vary significantly by profession. Physicians score the highest. Completing training and increasing age raise the score. The multivariate model confirms the professional influence of physicians and the impact of training, highlighting these factors for practice in priority neighborhoods. Discussion-Conclusion - The professionals surveyed have knowledge about smoking cessation care for older adults, which they consider part of their mission. However, they appear to lack confidence in their ability to manage such care. Training is essential to improve practices.
