The November 2015 attacks in Paris: media exposure to images and symptoms of post-traumatic stress
The extensive media coverage of the November 2015 attacks in Paris (Bataclan, café terraces, and Stade de France) exposed a very large portion of the French population to images of the terrorist attacks, prompting public authorities to examine the effects of such exposure, particularly on symptoms of post-traumatic stress. This study examined the relationship between media exposure related to the events (time spent watching coverage of the events on television or the Internet over a three-day period following the attacks) and the reporting of post-traumatic stress symptoms measured using the Post-traumatic Stress Disorder Checklist for DSM-5 (PCL-5). A quota sample representative of the general population in terms of gender, age, socioeconomic status, region, and urban area size was recruited via an online panel (BVA panel). In June 2016, 1,760 individuals fully completed the survey via an online questionnaire. The results showed a positive association between time spent viewing images related to the attacks and the presence of post-traumatic stress symptoms, after adjusting for sociodemographic characteristics, direct exposure to the events, and individual vulnerability factors (history of traumatic events, psychological disorders, and negative life events). Further analyses will need to be conducted to test the interactions between media exposure and sociodemographic and individual factors (psychological history) in order to identify the population groups most vulnerable to the effects of media exposure and thus better target prevention efforts.
