Experiences and Management of the COVID-19 Health Crisis: The Perspective of Night-Shift Hospital Staff at Assistance publique - Hôpitaux de Paris During the First Wave of the Pandemic (AP-HP Aladdin Survey, June 15–September 15, 2020)
Background and Objectives - Night work increases the risk of health problems. This study documents the experiences and perceptions of night-shift hospital staff at the Assistance publique - Hôpitaux de Paris (AP-HP) during the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods - We present the descriptive results of the online questionnaire from the AP-HP Aladdin survey (June 15–September 15, 2020; 39 hospitals; data weighted to ensure representativeness of all AP-HP night-shift hospital workers). Results - Among the 1,387 survey respondents (52.3% of whom were nurses), 19% changed their duties to care for COVID-19 patients. In total, 90.6% are afraid of transmitting COVID-19 to their loved ones, 65.5% are afraid of becoming infected at work, and 77.8% feel more vulnerable to infection. Few (10.1%) have recently received psychological support; 19.6% trust institutions to manage the health crisis; 58.4% have had difficulty accessing COVID-19 testing; and 59.7% found it difficult to apply protective measures, which 27.6% consider inadequate. Conclusions - As the pandemic continues, it is necessary to assess the impact of the health crisis on night-shift hospital staff in order to effectively address their health needs. Lessons must be learned from the first wave of the pandemic to meet these staff members’ expectations regarding information and personal protection against COVID-19.
