Characteristics and vaccination history of vulnerable individuals vaccinated against COVID-19 at a food distribution site in Paris
Background - To facilitate access to COVID-19 vaccination for vulnerable populations, Samusocial de Paris organized vaccination efforts at a food distribution site in northern Paris. With booster shots now available to everyone, the objective of this study was to describe the profile of individuals using this initiative rather than the standard public health system, to understand their vaccination journey, and to identify associated factors. Method - The VEDA study is a retrospective cross-sectional study conducted between December 1, 2021, and March 17, 2022, at Porte de la Villette in Paris. Following their vaccination, participants were interviewed face-to-face in one of the survey’s languages. Results - The majority of the 447 participants were in highly precarious situations, both administratively and in terms of resources and housing. Approximately 40% of those receiving their first dose had been exposed to the virus, mostly asymptomatically. More than one-third of those interviewed had been vaccinated late (after November 2021). Factors contributing to this late vaccination included being under 40 years of age, living in precarious housing conditions, lacking health insurance, and not regularly visiting this food distribution site. Conclusion - This study highlights the value of vaccination efforts established at food distribution sites to reach populations particularly isolated from healthcare. It underscores the importance of targeting younger and more vulnerable individuals for their future booster doses as vaccination centers gradually close.
