COVID-19: Epidemiological Update for the Hauts-de-France Region as of August 19, 2021

Key Points

  • With two weeks to go before the start of the school year and the resumption of socio-economic activities, there has been a renewed surge in COVID-19 cases, particularly in the north (the Lille metropolitan area, the Dunkirk region, the coast, the former mining basin, etc.) and in the south of the region (Oise, southern Aisne)

  • High incidence rates, particularly among those under 50 (also rising among those under 10) as well as among those over 65

  • Increased pressure on healthcare capacity, notably with a rise in new hospitalizations and admissions to critical care units observed in week 32

  • Incidence levels and impact on healthcare capacity equivalent to those observed in September 2020, at the start of the second wave of the epidemic

  • By mid-August, more than one in two residents of Hauts-de-France (59.1%) was fully vaccinated, including nearly one-third of young people aged 12 to 17 (31.5%) and four out of five people over 75 (83.0%)
