Health Surveillance in French Guiana. Bulletin of February 20, 2025.

Key Points

Dengue

  • The dengue epidemic has been over in the region since the end of August 2024. The number of confirmed cases is increasing in S06 and S07 in the western coastal and Savanes sectors. The circulating serotype is exclusively DENV-2.

  • Although the dengue epidemic has ended, vigilance regarding arboviral diseases must be maintained. Testing for biological confirmation remains essential for any dengue-like syndrome.

Malaria

  • The number of malaria cases diagnosed in the healthcare system over the past two weeks was low and declining, with 6 cases of P. vivax (2 in S06 and 4 in S07, vs. 11 in total during S04 and S05), 3 of which were relapses.

  • Since the beginning of the year, new infections in the region have occurred primarily in the gold mining area of the municipality of Kourou. A total of 41 cases have been recorded since the start of the year: 35 in January and 6 during the first two weeks of February.

Acute Respiratory Infections

  • The seasonal flu epidemic continues, with a marked decrease in the number of cases over the past two weeks compared to the previous two. The epidemic peak was most likely reached during week S05.

Diarrhea

  • Activity continues to decline in isolated communities (CDPS and local hospitals), and has also been trending downward along the coast over the past two weeks (data from the Cayenne and Western Guyana hospitals).
