Key Points

Dengue

  • Dengue activity was low in French Guiana, with 2 confirmed cases in the past two weeks, including one DENV3 case.

Chikungunya

  • Since January 26, when the first locally acquired case of chikungunya was confirmed by RT-PCR in French Guiana, 9 cases have been confirmed. Of these, 7 were locally acquired, 1 was imported from Suriname, and for 1 case, information could not be obtained. The identified strain is similar to the one currently circulating in the Americas1. The virus had not been actively circulating in the territory since 2015.

Malaria

  • The number of malaria cases reported in the territory was low and declining over the past two weeks, with 9 cases recorded versus 18 in S04 and S05. These 9 cases were caused by P. vivax, including 3 relapses.

  • In total, 51 cases have been reported since the beginning of the year, including 42 in January, exceeding the levels observed during the last two months of 2025 and representing a 56% increase compared to January 2025.

Acute respiratory infections

Influenza and influenza-like illness

  • Although the influenza epidemic remains active, it has again shown a marked decline over the past two weeks, approaching inter-epidemic levels.

Bronchiolitis and COVID-19

  • Activity related to bronchiolitis and SARS-CoV-2 was low throughout the country.

Diarrhea

  • Diarrhea-related activity was low in primary care centers and local hospitals but showed a marked increase in the emergency departments of the three hospitals.
