Health Monitoring in French Guiana. Bulletin of November 22, 2024.

Key Points

Dengue

  • The dengue epidemic has been over in the region since the end of August. On the island of Cayenne, following the increase observed a few weeks ago, the number of consultations for dengue-like syndrome continues to fluctuate and remains at a moderate level.

  • Although the dengue epidemic has ended, vigilance regarding arboviral diseases must be maintained. Biological confirmation testing remains essential for any dengue-like syndrome.

Malaria

  • The number of malaria cases diagnosed in the healthcare system over the past two weeks remains low, with a total of 15 cases, including 2 cases of P. falciparum (imported). Among the 13 cases of P. vivax, 4 are relapses. However, an increase in cases is observed in St. Georges in S46, with 8 cases of P. vivax diagnosed by the CDPS.

  • Since early September, new infections in the region have occurred primarily in the urban and peri-urban areas of St. Georges and in the gold mining areas of the municipality of Kourou. In total, 402 malaria cases have been diagnosed since the beginning of the year. Malaria activity is on the rise in October: 12 cases were recorded in August, 10 in September, and 24 in October. Fifteen cases were recorded in November (S45 and S46).

Acute Respiratory Infections

  • The RSV bronchiolitis epidemic among children under two years of age continues in French Guiana. However, the incidence of acute respiratory infections is slightly decreasing in community practice. Data on emergency department visits are not available for S46 due to a data transmission issue at the CHC.

Diarrhea

  • Activity is moderate and stable in Guyana’s remote areas (CDPS and local hospitals). However, this trend should be interpreted with caution due to the drought and the difficulty of traveling by canoe for residents of remote villages wishing to reach the CDPS. Along the coast, the situation is also stable in primary care.
