Epidemiological Situation of the Zika Virus in the French West Indies and French Guiana. Update as of October 20, 2016.
Analysis of the Epidemiological Situation
In Martinique, for five consecutive weeks, the estimated number of clinically suggestive cases has been below 200. In light of the island’s epidemiological situation and following the recommendations of the Cemie, the Management Unit met on October 13 and approved the transition to Phase 4 of the Psage: “End of the epidemic with continued viral circulation.”
In French Guiana, epidemiological indicators show that Zika-related activity remained low and stable throughout the territory during the first half of October, although the virus continues to circulate. In addition, two outbreaks were recorded in the Cayenne Island area, one in the municipality of Rémire-Montjoly and another in the municipality of Cayenne. As a reminder, the Zika epidemic has been over in the territory since the third week of September. On October 18, 2016, the Prefecture of French Guiana officially returned the Cayenne Island sector to Phase 4 of the Psage ("End of Epidemic") following the recommendation of the Expert Committee, which met on October 7, 2016.
In Guadeloupe, surveillance indicators have been at low levels for three consecutive weeks. Furthermore, nearly two-thirds of municipalities report no suspected cases. These factors indicate low viral circulation on the Guadeloupe archipelago. The Expert Committee is scheduled to meet shortly to discuss the evolution of the epidemiological situation. Guadeloupe remains in Phase 3a of the Psage*: "Epidemic phase requiring standard management measures."
In Saint Martin, the epidemic continues with a high number of suspected cases. The island’s epidemiological situation remains in Phase 3a of the Psage*: “Epidemic phase requiring standard management measures.”
In Saint Barthélemy, recorded epidemiological indicators are declining. However, this decline remains to be confirmed over the coming weeks. The island’s epidemiological situation still corresponds to Phase 3a of the Psage*: “Epidemic phase requiring standard management measures.”
