Epidemiological Situation of Malaria in French Guiana. Update as of July 7, 2023.

Summary of the Epidemiological Situation

The epidemiological situation regarding malaria was moderate during the second quarter of 2023, with an increase in the number of malaria cases, which doubled compared to the same period last year. This situation is primarily due to two foci of local transmission located in Régina and Matoury.

Key figures for the first half of 2023

  • 48 malaria cases diagnosed in the region, 8 patients hospitalized, 0 deaths

  • 32 cases caused by P. vivax, 15 by P. falciparum, and 1 by P. ovale (imported)

  • 13 imported cases and 22 indigenous cases, including 5 attacks caused by P. falciparum located in the Littoral region
