COVID-19: Epidemiological Update for French Guiana as of October 14, 2021

Key Points

  • For the second consecutive week, the trend in confirmed cases was downward, with a regional incidence rate reaching 369 cases per 100,000 inhabitants (a decrease of 25%), the lowest rate since the start of this fourth wave. The effective R was significantly below 1, continuing to decline and reflecting the downward trend that began in week 39.

  • The downward trend appears to be continuing for the current week (Week 41); the peak of the fourth wave has therefore likely been passed. The regional incidence rate remains, however, at a relatively high level. This downward trend is observed across all sectors, particularly in the Cayenne Island and Western regions.

  • At the same time, a downward trend is also observed for hospitalizations, both in general wards and in intensive care. However, these remain at a relatively high level, with 85 new hospitalizations across all departments last week compared to 95 the previous week, and 16 new admissions to intensive care compared to 20 the previous week.

  • The number of deaths is slightly down: 12 deaths were recorded in week 40. The number of deaths recorded during this fourth wave has already reached 90% of the number observed during the third wave. Vaccination coverage is progressing slowly in French Guiana. It stands at 24% for a full course of vaccination in the general population and at 32% among the population aged 12 and older.
