COVID-19: Epidemiological Update for French Guiana as of July 15, 2021
Key Points
With 538 cases last week, the decline in confirmed cases continued in week 27. The positivity rate fell to 6%, approaching the 5% threshold, while the testing rate rose. As of July 6, the effective reproduction number (R) of cases was 0.89, thus remaining significantly below 1.
At the regional level, the sharpest decline was recorded in Western French Guiana (-24%) and Savanes/Kourou (-23%), while the trend remained stable on Cayenne Island. In week 27, one confirmed case and one suspected case of the Delta variant were detected. Hospitalizations remained stable at 61, the same as in Week 26. Intensive care admissions rose slightly to 19, compared to 15 in Week 26. Emergency room visits were stable, though with variation across hospitals. The total number of deaths since March 2020 stands at 162. One in three people aged 50–74, and one in four people aged 75 and older, are now fully vaccinated. Vaccination prevents more than 90% of severe cases. It is our best defense against the risk of a new variant emerging.
The emergence of clusters, particularly in the workplace, underscores the importance of preventive measures in the workplace and of getting tested at the slightest sign of symptoms.
