COVID-19: Epidemiological Update for French Guiana as of July 1, 2021

Key Points

With fewer than 700 cases last week compared to nearly 900 the week before, the decline in confirmed cases accelerated in week 25. This
represents a nearly 20% drop in the regional incidence rate compared to the previous week, which stands at 234 per 100,000 residents.
The testing rate remained stable in week 25, with the positivity rate dropping by 4 percentage points over the past two weeks to 8%, below the 10% alert threshold. As of June 22, the effective reproduction number (R) of cases was 0.84, thus remaining significantly below 1 and continuing to decline.

At the regional level, a clear decrease in the incidence rate has been confirmed on the island of Cayenne and in the Savanes sector, while the third wave continues in western French Guiana, reaching 403 cases per 100,000 inhabitants in week 25.

In week 25, no new suspected cases of the Delta variant were detected. Intensive care admissions were down, with 16 admissions in week 25 compared to 21 the previous week. Hospitalizations were slightly up, with 95 hospitalizations. These hospital indicators lag by about ten days compared to the incidence of confirmed cases. Emergency room visits were down at CHC and CHK, and stable at CHOG. The total number of deaths since March 2020 stands at 145.
