COVID-19: Epidemiological Update for French Guiana as of January 12, 2022
Key Points
As in the previous week, the number of cases has increased fivefold in French Guiana, and this sharp rise affects all regions, including Oyapock, where the increase remains more moderate. The effective R stands at 2.32 (compared to 2.43 last week).
General practice visits for acute respiratory infections have risen sharply, reflecting the increased circulation of the virus in the population.
New hospitalizations across all departments have also increased. However, only 40% of these are directly related to Covid care. The current Covid-related hospitalization rates are close to those observed at the peaks of the third and fourth waves in French Guiana (the Gamma wave in May 2021 and the Delta wave in September 2021).
New admissions to intensive care remain stable, with 7 admissions last week; the number of new deaths is also stable, confirming at this stage that the many diagnosed infections are less severe.
Vaccination coverage for the booster dose has continued to increase significantly, with nearly 20% of French Guianans over the age of 50 having already received it.
