COVID-19: Epidemiological Update for French Guiana as of February 2, 2022

Key Points

Since the peak was passed in early January in French Guiana, the epidemiological situation has improved significantly. The number of cases has been cut in half in one week. The incidence stands at 677 cases per 100,000 inhabitants: it therefore remains at a relatively high level but is clearly decreasing. The effective R value is also declining (0.44).

This decline is seen across all regions, except for Oyapock, where the trend has been stable for the past three weeks. Indicators for outpatient and inpatient care are also decreasing, reflecting the drop in infections observed since early January. In fact, visits to emergency rooms and routine hospitalizations have been cut in half, and fewer than 10 people have been admitted to intensive care over the past 7 days.

The weekly death toll, which remains relatively high, has stabilized for the first time after several weeks of increases. Vaccination coverage is slowly increasing across the region: 39% of people aged 12 and older have received a full primary vaccination series, and 15% have received their booster dose.
