COVID-19: Epidemiological Update for French Guiana as of December 23, 2021

Key Points

In week 50, a slight increase in the number of confirmed cases was observed (+13%), with a regional incidence rate of 117 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. This upward trend mainly affects the Savanes (+26%) and Île de Cayenne (+13%) sectors. The incidence rate is also rising in the West sector but remains at a low level. The effective R was 1.09 (not significant), and the regional positivity rate remained stable and still below the 5% alert threshold. The testing rate was up (+7%) and remained at a high level. The Delta variant remains the dominant strain in the territory.

In week 51, the first case of the Omicron variant was detected in the region. Hospitalizations across all departments were up slightly, while the number of ICU admissions and deaths remained stable compared to the previous week. To protect the most vulnerable and prevent transmission, particularly during the holiday season when gatherings are common, it is important to remain vigilant, get your booster shot, or start your vaccination series. Standard preventive measures must also be maintained, especially as the Omicron variant begins to circulate in the region.
