COVID-19: Epidemiological Update for French Guiana as of August 19, 2021
Key Points
Last week, the incidence continued to rise: a 40% increase in cases was observed, primarily in the Cayenne Island and Kourou-Macouria sectors. In the west, the incidence remained stable. The spread of the Delta variant also continued, and it now accounts for 78% of PCR screenings. Conventional hospitalizations increased slightly in hospitals in Cayenne and Kourou, suggesting that the fourth wave is beginning to impact hospitalizations. Intensive care admissions remained stable. In the West, both conventional hospitalizations and intensive care admissions remained stable, reflecting the end of the third wave.
Since Monday, 664 cases have been confirmed, representing approximately 60% of last week’s cases, and the incidence continues to rise. Furthermore, a continued increase is also observed in the West: 57 cases have been confirmed since Monday, accounting for 85% of confirmed cases from the entire previous week, which may signal the start of the fourth wave in this region: this trend will need to be confirmed in the coming days. Vaccination coverage for a full
course stands at 19% in the general population. Among people over 50, vaccination coverage averages 35%.
