Chikungunya in French Guiana. Bulletin dated March 19, 2026.
Key Points
Since the detection of the first case of chikungunya in late January 2026, 51 cases have been confirmed by laboratories. Viral circulation remains primarily concentrated on the western coast, where 86% of cases have been recorded, and seven ongoing outbreaks involving two to four cases are being monitored. In this sector, the virus is therefore actively circulating and established, but no exponential growth has been observed so far. In total, five new cases were confirmed last week, including one in the Savanes sector and one in the Maroni sector, both of which have now entered the sporadic transmission phase. The West Coast sector remains in the epidemic outbreak phase, while the others remain under epidemiological surveillance. Finally, an epidemiological report summarizing the 2014–2015 chikungunya epidemic has been published.
