Assessment of the Feasibility of Implementing Screening for Childhood Lead Poisoning Among Children Living Near Three Glass Factories in Lorraine. Recommendations and Management Measures, 2007–2008
Introduction - As part of efforts to reduce cases of lead poisoning linked to industrial activity, glassworks in Lorraine were required to commission a soil assessment to determine the level of lead exposure among the population. The Eastern Region Unit of the French Institute for Public Health Surveillance was commissioned by the Departmental Health Offices of the Vosges and Meurthe-et-Moselle to assess the feasibility of implementing a screening program for childhood lead poisoning around three glassworks. Method - Expected blood lead levels in children living near the crystal glassworks were estimated based on assessments of their lead exposure doses. These were calculated using three scenarios based on population and environmental data. The level of expected blood lead concentrations serves as the decision-making criterion for implementing screening. Results - The results showed that expected average and extreme blood lead concentrations were below the thresholds that, according to the current methodology of the French Institute for Public Health Surveillance, would justify the implementation of screening for the three sites studied. Discussion and Conclusion - This approach is part of a broader objective to reduce exposures that remain unacceptable given the levels commonly encountered, justifying the implementation of appropriate measures (management of contaminated soil frequented by children, reminding those who grow their own vegetables of hygiene rules, among other things). Awareness-raising efforts among healthcare professionals regarding the identification of at-risk populations have also been carried out. (R.A.)
