Public Health Bulletin on HIV and STIs in Brittany. December 2021.

Key Points

  • LaboVIH Testing: The number of HIV serology tests performed in Brittany declined in 2020 and was 1.15 times lower than the national average. Since 2010, the proportion of positive serology results has ranged between 0.7 and 1.3 per 1,000 tests. This proportion is declining in 2020 and is 2.2 times lower than the national estimate. In 2020, amid the pandemic, participation in the LaboVIH survey was lower (71% in Brittany and 72% in mainland France).

  • HIV Diagnosis: In 2020, 101 (95% CI: 70–131) people were diagnosed with HIV in Brittany. The HIV diagnosis rate (30 per million inhabitants) was among the lowest in France. It was 2.4 times lower than the national rate (72 per million inhabitants).

  • 72% of newly diagnosed individuals were men. 54% of individuals were diagnosed as HIV-positive following homosexual intercourse and 40% following heterosexual intercourse. Over the 2015–2020 period, the most common mode of transmission for men born in France was homosexual intercourse (81%), and for men born abroad, it was heterosexual intercourse (79%).

  • Most of the results should be interpreted with caution due to the lack of consolidated data for 2019 and 2020.
