Heat Wave and Health Alert System in Brittany. Epidemiological Update as of June 21, 2017.

Key Points

  • First orange heat wave alert (in Ille-et-Vilaine) recorded in Brittany since the implementation of the National Heat Wave Plan. The three other departments in Brittany are under a yellow alert.

  • Since the start of the heat wave: an upward trend in calls for heat-related medical issues in both the OSCOUR® and SOS Médecins networks.

  • For yesterday:

    • - 15 emergency room visits for heat-related illnesses; these visits primarily involved people aged 15–74 (n=8) and those aged 75 and older (n=7). 60% (9/15) of these emergency room visits were followed by hospitalization;

    • - 8 SOS Médecins consultations for heat-related illnesses; these consultations primarily involved people aged 15–74 (n=6) and those aged 75 and older (n=2).

  • An early heatwave episode that began in western France and spread eastward and northward across the country. The early onset of this episode was an aggravating factor (occurring at the end of Ramadan, during the school and university year).
