Health Surveillance in Brittany. Epidemiological Update as of October 25, 2017.
Key points
Bronchiolitis: The number of visits to local and hospital emergency departments has stabilized, and case numbers remain low. The onset of the epidemic is expected to be slowed by school holidays. Start of viral circulation: detection of the first positive samples for respiratory syncytial virus in samples analyzed at the virology laboratories of Rennes University Hospital and Brest University Hospital over the past two weeks.
Asthma: High volumes of visits to community and hospital emergency departments continue. Among children under 15, this condition accounts for 3.8% and 2.2% of consultations with a coded diagnosis, respectively. Across all age groups, 21% of asthma diagnoses in hospital emergency departments result in hospitalization. This coincides with high viral circulation of rhinoviruses and enteroviruses identified in respiratory specimens analyzed at the Virology Laboratory of the Rennes University Hospital.
ENT Conditions: Sustained activity for ENT conditions despite a decline in visits to SOS Médecins clinics and emergency departments (data not shown).
Influenza and Influenza-Like IllnessesThe influenza vaccination campaign has been underway since October 6, 2017. The Virology Laboratory at the Brest University Hospital reports the first detection of influenza A virus in a respiratory specimen (data not shown).
