Health Surveillance in Brittany. Epidemiological Update as of March 15, 2017.

Key points

Gastroenteritis

Epidemic activity. Increased use of hospital emergency departments (+20%) and outpatient care (+8%). Seventy-one percent of hospitalized cases involve children under 5 years of age.

Activity within seasonal averages in both sources.

High activity in primary care: incidence rate of acute diarrhea estimated at 170 cases per 100,000 inhabitants (95% CI [75; 265], unconsolidated Sentinelles data).

Circulation of Rotavirus, Norovirus, Astrovirus, and Adenovirus identified in enteric specimens analyzed at the virology laboratories of the Rennes University Hospital and the Brest University Hospital.

Influenza and influenza-like illness

End of the epidemic. Continued decline in hospital emergency department visits (-70%) and a very slight increase in community emergency department visits (+6%). Activity below seasonal averages in both networks.

Low activity in primary care: incidence rate of influenza-like illness estimated at 17 cases per 100,000 inhabitants (95% CI [0; 39], unconsolidated Sentinelles data).

Decrease in the positivity rate for type A or B viruses at Rennes University Hospital and stability at Brest University Hospital (1% out of 91 samples and 3% out of 35 samples, respectively).

Bronchiolitis (children under 2 years of age)

End of the epidemic. Decrease in visits to community emergency departments (-25%) and a very slight increase in hospital emergency department visits (+3%).

Decrease in the RSV positivity rate at the virology laboratories of the Rennes University Hospital and the Brest University Hospital (9% out of 91 samples and 9% out of 35 samples, respectively).

Mortality

An excess of deaths across all age groups was observed from week 52/2016 to 07/2017. In weeks 08 and 09, the number of deaths across all age groups and among those aged 75 and older were below the thresholds (S09, subject to data consolidation, which is not yet complete).
