Health Surveillance in Brittany. Epidemiological Update as of January 25, 2017.

Key Points

Influenza and influenza-like illness. Epidemic activity. Slight decrease in the number of SOS Médecins consultations (-7%) and sharp decrease in emergency room visits (-29%). Activity remains higher than in previous seasons during the same period for each source. High activity in primary care: incidence rate of influenza-like illness estimated at 394 cases per 100,000 inhabitants (95% CI [275, 513], unconsolidated Sentinelles data).Continued decline in the circulation of type A virus at the Brest University Hospital (positivity rate = 12%, out of 162 samples).

Severe cases of influenza: Since week 44/2016, 52 severe cases of influenza have been admitted to intensive care in Brittany; two have died. Fifty-one were infected with a type A virus and one with a type B virus. The average age was 65 years. Forty-six patients had at least one risk factor targeted by vaccination.

Acute Respiratory Infections in Nursing HomesSince September 1, 2016, 97 outbreaks of acute respiratory infections in nursing homes have been reported.

Bronchiolitis (children under 2 years of age)Epidemic activity (peak in week 51). Further increases expected in emergency room visits and SOS Médecins consultations. Viral circulation on the rise according to data from the Virology Laboratory at Brest University Hospital: positivity rate = 19% out of 162 samples.

Gastroenteritis: Epidemic activity. Use of community emergency rooms is declining, accounting for 8.5% of consultations. Use of hospital emergency rooms has stabilized. Activity remains slightly above seasonal averages in both sources.High activity in primary care: incidence rate of acute diarrhea estimated at 220 cases per 100,000 inhabitants (95% CI [128, 312], unconsolidated Sentinelles data). Circulation of Rotavirus and Norovirus. No circulation of Adenovirus.
