Measles Cases in Eastern FranceSince April 10, 2015, a resurgence of measles cases has been observed in the Haut-Rhin department, with 41 cases reported to the Alsace Regional Health Agency (ARS), primarily within four schools. These various outbreaks indicate that the measles virus is circulating in this department and suggest that a measles epidemic risk is re-emerging in our region. This alert comes amid a global resurgence of measles in Europe, particularly in Italy and Germany (which we reported on during the epidemiological update of March 12), with more than 1,000 cases to date. The first outbreak identified in the Haut-Rhin is linked to a school trip to Berlin. The school holidays that began this week in the Alsace region are likely to lead to the spread of the virus to other regions, particularly through the presence of contagious children in daycare centers, summer camps, or other group settings. In this context, health authorities are encouraging parents of children and adolescents, as well as adults born since 1980 and those most at risk, to check with healthcare professionals to ensure their vaccinations are up to date.France experienced a major measles epidemic in 2008–2012, peaking in 2011 with over 20,000 reported cases, including 1,500 cases of severe pneumonia, 34 neurological complications, and 10 deaths. For the record, in 2011, 163 cases (including 60 hospitalizations) were reported in Burgundy and 316 cases in Franche-Comté (including 66 hospitalizations).Biological confirmation of cases (serum IgM testing or saliva testing) as well as rapid reporting to the ARS (measles is a notifiable disease) enable health authorities to better control outbreaks.
