Suicidal Thoughts and Reported Suicide Attempts (Public Health France Barometer 2024 – Ages 18–79)

  • In 2024, the prevalence of suicidal thoughts in the past 12 months among 18- to 79-year-olds was estimated at 4.8%. It was 0.4% for reported suicide attempts in the past 12 months and 4.8% for reported suicide attempts in a lifetime.

Emergency department visits for self-harm (OSCOUR® 2024 – all ages)

  • In 2024, 9,181 emergency department visits for self-harm were recorded, representing 3.9‰ of total activity, an increase for the second consecutive year.

  • Women accounted for two-thirds of visits, with an increase observed among 11- to 17-year-olds, who also had the highest share of activity (16.8‰).

Hospitalizations for self-harm (HGAI) (SNDS PMSI-MCO 2024 – all ages)

  • Increase in the number of hospitalizations for self-harm in 2024, with 11,268 hospitalizations recorded, representing a standardized rate of 137 hospitalizations per 100,000 inhabitants (+11% compared to 2023).

  • Among women (two-thirds of HGAI cases), those aged 11–24 continued to have the highest HGAI rates (particularly adolescent girls aged 11–17, with 674 hospitalizations per 100,000 women), and these rates have been rising steadily since 2020.

  • Drug overdose was the method used in 79% of hospitalizations and was the most common method regardless of gender.

Deaths by suicide (SNDS CépiDc 2023 – all ages)

  • Decrease in the number of suicide deaths in 2023, with 918 deaths recorded, corresponding to a standardized rate of 11 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants (-15% compared to 2022).

  • Among men (who accounted for three-quarters of suicide deaths), those aged 65 and older and those aged 45–64 had the highest suicide death rates, with 34 and 23 deaths per 100,000 inhabitants, respectively. Following an increase in 2022, rates are declining across all age groups.

  • The most frequently recorded method of suicide on death certificates was hanging (50%), regardless of gender.

2024 Activities of the 3114 and VigilanS Prevention Programs

  • From June to December 2024, 3114, the national suicide prevention hotline, received 26,193 calls in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes.

  • In 2024, the four coordinating centers participated in the VigilanS system for follow-up and monitoring to prevent repeat suicide attempts in the region, and 4,237 people were enrolled in this program.
