Week 9 of the outbreak – end of the outbreak near

• Surveillance indicators continued to decline in primary care and emergency departments over the past week (2017-06), though they have not yet fallen below epidemic thresholds. The impact remains particularly pronounced among people aged 65 and older, due to the near-exclusive circulation of the A(H3N2) virus.

• The rise in mortality, regardless of cause, which began in the region in week 2016-51, continued and intensified through week 2017-01 (+42.4% across all ages). Although declining since week 2017-02, excess mortality across all ages remains significant in week 2017-04 (+12%) (unconsolidated data). Excess mortality from all causes is estimated at approximately 2,510 deaths between weeks 2016-49 and 2017-04 in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes. It primarily affects people aged 65 and older. It appears to be at least partly linked to the flu epidemic, although it is not yet possible to quantify the proportion attributable to it at this stage.
