Surveillance of infections related to the novel coronavirus (MERS-CoV). Update as of April 30, 2014. Since the discovery in September 2012 of the new coronavirus (Middle East Respiratory Syndrome coronavirus, MERS-CoV) in Saudi Arabia, identified in two patients who had developed severe pneumonia, surveillance has been established under the coordination of the World Health Organization (WHO) and the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC).As of April 30, 2014, this surveillance has identified 261 cases worldwide, 93 of whom have died. Additionally, 156 cases and 30 deaths have been reported by Saudi authorities but not yet notified to the WHO. The global total would therefore be 417 cases and 123 deaths.
