Health Status of Psychiatric Inpatients at Le Vinatier in Bron: Descriptive Results of the Liverspin Cross-Sectional Study, 2022–2023

Introduction – People with mental disorders have poorer overall health than the general population. Among the various health conditions found in psychiatric patients, the most significant are metabolic, infectious, and liver disorders. In France, there is little data on the overall health status of populations hospitalized in psychiatric settings. Methods – The Liverspin study (Liver Status in Psychiatric Inpatients) assessed the liver and general health status of adult patients hospitalized at Vinatier, in Bron, between April 2, 2022, and December 31, 2023. The variables collected included sociodemographic and psychiatric data (primary diagnosis, current length of hospitalization, previous stays, substance use), general medical data, a comprehensive blood work panel, liver elastography, and an assessment of behaviors associated with infection risk. All descriptive data are presented in this article. Results – A total of 450 patients were included. The prevalence rates of the viral infections studied were 0.7% (HIV), 2.0% (HCV serology), 0.4% (HCV RNA), and 1.3% (HBsAg for HBV), respectively. The estimated prevalence of hepatic steatosis, defined by elastometry as a CAP score >250 dB/m, was 24.3%. Among the included patients, 44.9% were overweight or obese, 24.6% had abnormal triglyceride levels, and 9.2% had elevated glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c). Conclusion – Although the rates of viral infections were lower than those reported in other French psychiatric studies, metabolic disorders affecting the liver and other organs were extremely common among psychiatric inpatients.
