Epidemiological Situation of Dengue Fever in French Guiana. Update as of March 25, 2013.

Analysis of the Epidemiological Situation

Dengue activity intensified during the second week of March, particularly in Matoury and Cayenne, where the number of hospitalized cases also increased. The island of Cayenne therefore remains in the epidemic phase. Although data from the sentinel network have been incomplete for the past two weeks in the Kourou sector, other indicators suggest that this sector remains in an epidemic phase. The Western sector is still in a pre-epidemic phase. A retrospective update of syndromic data has revealed epidemic activity in the municipality of Régina. Cases of dengue continue to be reported in other municipalities in the interior, such as St. Georges, Maripasoula, Apatou, Papaïchton, and Camopi. The DENV-1, DENV-2, DENV-3, and DENV-4 serotypes are co-circulating, with a very high prevalence of the DENV-2 virus.Given the overall epidemiological situation, it is important to reiterate the importance of eliminating larval breeding sites and taking personal precautions against mosquitoes. In the event of a sudden onset of fever, it is recommended to consult your primary care physician.
