Heat Waves and Health in Normandy. Bulletin dated August 19, 2026.

Key Points

  • Météo-France has placed the departments of Manche and Orne under an orange heat wave alert starting August 11, and the departments of Calvados, Eure, and Seine-Maritime starting August 12. The heat wave alert ended in Normandy on August 17, at which point all departments in Normandy returned to a green alert.
  • A regional analysis of emergency room visits and SOS Médecins calls for the composite health indicator iCanicule (including hyperthermia, dehydration, and hyponatremia) shows a slight increase in activity, which, however, remained close to the non-heatwave levels typically observed during the summer season. The hospitalizations observed primarily involved people aged 75 and older.
  • At the departmental level, an increase in iCanicule-related cases was observed in Calvados (SOS Médecins) and Seine-Maritime (emergency room visits), particularly on August 13.
  • All indicators of healthcare utilization remained at lower levels than those observed during previous heat waves this year.
