Heat Waves and Health in Nouvelle-Aquitaine. Bulletin dated August 19, 2026.

Key Points

  • A new heat wave began affecting residents of the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region on August 10. All departments in the region, except for Pyrénées-Atlantiques, were placed under an orange heat wave alert by Météo France for at least one day. As of 6:00 a.m. on August 16, all departments in the region were under a green heat wave advisory.
  • Analysis of syndromic indicators (August 10–16):
    • The use of emergency care for all causes (hospital emergency departments in the Oscour® network and SOS Médecins), across all age groups and among those aged 75 and older, remained within the usual range for this time of year.
    • Hospital emergency department activity for the iCanicule indicator (hyperthermia, dehydration, and hyponatremia) remained relatively stable during this latest heat wave; however, a slight increase in the proportion of iCanicule-related hospitalizations following emergency department visits was observed, primarily among those aged 75 and older.
    • An increase in calls to SOS Médecins for the iCanicule indicator was observed between August 12 and 15.
