Health Surveillance in French Guiana. Bulletin dated November 5, 2026.

Key Points

Arboviral Diseases

Dengue

  • Dengue activity has been low over the past two weeks, consistent with the levels typically observed during the inter-epidemic period.

Chikungunya

  • Since late January (S2026-04), 2,187 cases of chikungunya have been laboratory-confirmed in French Guiana: the regional trend has been generally downward in recent weeks. The Western Coast is in the post-epidemic phase (since S38), the Savanes sector remains in the epidemic phase (since S23), Cayenne Island is in the phase of sporadic outbreaks (since S18), the Maroni region is in the sporadic transmission phase (since S11), and the Interior, Eastern Interior, and Oyapock sectors are under epidemiological surveillance. The management levels of the ORSEC plan for combating arboviral diseases, as defined by health authorities, are presented on page 8.

Malaria

  • The number of malaria cases reported in the territory was low over the past two weeks, with 13 cases recorded (7 in S44 and 6 in S43, provisional data) compared to a total of 9 in S41 and S42. Of these 13 cases, 11 were caused by P. vivax (no relapses), 1 was caused by P. falciparum, and 1 was caused by P. malariae. Since the beginning of the year, 180 cases of malaria have been reported, including 12 in August, 9 in September, and 22 in October. Over the past three months, most infections have occurred in gold-mining areas in the Upper Maroni region, where a resurgence is being observed—a region that has historically been a hotspot for transmission but has been relatively spared over the past three years.

Acute Respiratory Infections

Flu-like illness

  • Flu activity was low in hospitals and at the CDPSs. Fewer than 5 cases of influenza were recorded per week, the vast majority of which were type B.

Bronchiolitis

  • Bronchiolitis activity was low throughout French Guiana.

COVID

  • SARS-CoV-2 activity remained low in French Guiana.

Diarrhea

  • Diarrhea-related activity was stable and moderate throughout the territory.
