Chikungunya

Since late January (Week 04), 1,968 cases of chikungunya have been laboratory-confirmed in French Guiana, including 36 in Week 38 (unconsolidated data). The virus is actively circulating in the territory:

• Western Coast: After several weeks of slowing virus circulation on the Western Coast and low emergency department activity due to chikungunya, the outbreak in this sector ended in S38. However, cases continue to be diagnosed, so vigilance must be maintained, as a resurgence of the epidemic cannot be ruled out given the regional situation.
• Savanas: The number of visits to the CHK emergency department for suspected chikungunya was down in Week 38 for the second consecutive week, and the proportion of emergency department activity related to these visits was 6%. Viral circulation appears to be slowing in this sector, even though the epidemic continues.
• Cayenne Island: In Week 38, four active outbreaks were being monitored, spread across two municipalities in the sector. Due to the lack of some laboratory data, the trend
  is difficult to interpret. Cayenne Island remains in the outbreak phase.
• Maroni: No new cases were biologically confirmed in Week 38 in this sector, which is in the sporadic transmission phase.
• Interior, Eastern Interior, and Oyapock: No new cases were biologically confirmed in S38. These sectors are in the epidemiological surveillance phase.
