To gather and document concerns about pollution among residents of the Orbiel Valley, the University of Toulouse – Jean Jaurès and the CNRS, in partnership with Santé publique France, are continuing the PRIOR study—“Practices and Perceptions of Risk among Residents of the Orbiel Valley”—by giving them a voice. The objective of this study is to describe the local context, particularly by gathering information on how the population perceives risks in relation to their activities, practices, and experience of the region.

A quantitative and qualitative study to develop solutions through dialogue

The context of the Orbiel Valley is marked by social, environmental, and economic challenges that compound existing health concerns. As concerns among the population persist, it became necessary to assess these issues with local stakeholders to complement studies already conducted. This is the purpose of the PRIOR study, which will help better document the concerns of the valley’s residents and understand how pollution in the area and the associated risks are experienced.

A first quantitative component involves administering a questionnaire to 1,000 residents to gather input from as many people as possible. Those selected at random will receive a letter inviting them to participate and will be contacted by phone by the CNRS research team if necessary. Participants have two options for completing the questionnaire: online or by phone.

The second, qualitative component is based on individual and group interviews, followed by observation sessions during which a researcher will accompany a resident in a specific activity so that the resident can explain their practices and the risks involved. This part of the study began this summer.

The study began in late January 2021 and will continue through 2022.

A cross-disciplinary and transparent scientific approach

The survey protocol was presented to the liaison committee—comprising elected officials, neighborhood associations, experts, site managers, and government representatives—to discuss the study area and the questionnaire pilot.

The data collection phase of the questionnaire survey is scheduled for 2021; the results will then be presented and discussed with the liaison committee before being made public.
