For more than 30 years, the Santé publique France Barometer has been a one-of-a-kind survey that measures and tracks the health behaviors, perceptions, and opinions of people living in France. The 2024 edition breaks new ground by presenting all indicators at the regional level. This regional perspective allows us to look beyond national trends to better understand the specific dynamics of each region and thus effectively support local stakeholders.

While the Grand Est region generally follows national trends, the results highlight specific regional characteristics. These are sometimes more favorable than the national average; for example, this is the case with best practices for protecting against tick bites, even though the region is particularly at risk. Conversely, certain vulnerabilities persist in the region. For example, daily smoking remains more prevalent than elsewhere, without being accompanied by increased motivation to quit among smokers.

These initial regional results thus pave the way for a better understanding of territorial dynamics. They should serve as a foundation for steering regional public health policies and defining intervention strategies tailored to specific contexts and populations, particularly with a view to reducing health inequalities.

This survey reveals findings that should guide public policy and prevention efforts in the Grand Est region:

  • Mental health: nearly one in six adults reports having experienced a depressive episode in the past 12 months. Young people, women, and those in precarious situations are the most affected. Yet nearly half do not seek care. Designating mental health as a Major National Cause offers an opportunity to transform perceptions and improve access to care.

  • Tobacco and alcohol use: one in five adults smokes daily, and just as many exceed the guidelines for low-risk alcohol consumption. These are risk factors for preventable diseases, requiring continued efforts in regional prevention and support policies to limit their health and social impacts.

  • Physical activity and combating a sedentary lifestyle: more than a quarter of adults spend over 7 hours a day sitting, a major risk factor for chronic diseases such as hypertension or type 2 diabetes. Only one-third engage in regular physical activity during their leisure time. It is crucial to address both individual behaviors and environmental design to promote an active lifestyle.

  • Social and gender inequalities: these disparities are pronounced across all the topics studied. They underscore the need to develop inclusive interventions tailored to specific regions and vulnerable populations.

A unique observatory to understand and influence the population’s health behaviors

With 35,000 respondents, including 2,400 in the Grand Est region, this survey is an essential tool for guiding public health prevention and information policies.

This survey, recognized as being of public interest and statistical quality, provides information that cannot be obtained elsewhere: individual behaviors, opinions, knowledge, and health events not captured by existing surveillance systems. The 2024 edition collects data on 20 major public health issues (15 presented for 2025 and 5 in March 2026): tobacco and alcohol use, physical activity, sleep, vaccination uptake, mental health…

Now updated every two years, this data reveals current health and social trends and thus provides the information needed to develop and evaluate public health policies.

Beyond the indicators, the Santé publique France Barometer highlights the influence of living conditions, social factors, and local environments on residents’ health. It also underscores the critical role of prevention, whether in the areas of mental health, substance use, health-promoting behaviors, or adaptation to the effects of climate change.
