Frequently Asked Questions About Waste and Incinerators

01 - How much waste is produced each year in France?

France produced 849 million tons of waste in 2004.

02 - How many incinerators are there in France?

In 2006, France had 128 operational incinerators (300 in 1997).

03 - What percentage of waste treatment is accounted for by incineration?

43% of household waste collected in 2004 was treated by incineration.

04 - What is the dioxin emissions rate from household waste incineration plants in France?

The dioxin emissions from household waste incineration plants in 2006, calculated based on measurements taken at the plant outlets, amounted to 8.5 g. The emissions were 95 g in 2005. The successful implementation by the December 28, 2005 deadline set for the application of the Ministerial Order of September 20, 2002 to existing facilities thus led, in 2006, to a further tenfold reduction in dioxin emissions compared to their 2005 levels. In total, dioxin emissions from municipal waste incineration plants were reduced by a factor of 100 between 1995 and 2006. At the same time, the fleet of incinerators, which included more than 300 facilities—many of them small-scale—was reduced to 128 facilities, most of which are newer plants with greater individual capacity than in the past.
