Update on enterovirus infections as of July 5, 2023.
Background
Enteroviruses (EV) are found worldwide. In temperate regions such as France, an increase in enterovirus infections is observed every year during the summer and fall. This increase can be observed as early as May but most often occurs in June and July. A summer peak is usually observed in S26 or S27, followed by a second, smaller peak in the fall. While most EV infections are mild or asymptomatic, some infections can lead to severe illness, depending on age, the immune system (humoral immune deficiency), or the type of EV.
In 2023, provisional data as of July 5, 2023, from 32 of the 36 RSE laboratories indicate enterovirus circulation from January through June (n = 781 cases through week 26, compared to 566 during the same period in 2022).
