Food consumption among food aid recipients in France in 2011–2012

Introduction.—In 2004–2005, the Abena-1 study, conducted among 1,164 food aid recipients, highlighted a significant gap between the frequency of consumption of certain food groups and the nutritional recommendations of the National Nutrition and Health Program (PNNS). Given that the economic and social context has changed and the organization of food aid has been revised, the study was repeated to describe the sociodemographic and economic profiles and dietary consumption patterns of food aid recipients and how these have changed since Abena-1. Methods.- This is a cross-sectional study conducted in Paris, Dijon, Marseille, and the departments of Seine-Saint-Denis, Hauts-de-Seine, and Val-de-Marne. Participants were recruited from November 2011 to mid-April 2012 using a two-stage random sampling method (food assistance organizations followed by recipients). Data were collected in face-to-face interviews using a questionnaire that included, in particular, a record of consumption frequencies, allowing for analysis according to PNNS guidelines (fruits and vegetables, dairy products, etc.). Results.—As of March 7, 2012, 77 food assistance programs (acceptance rate: 93%) and 1,618 beneficiaries were included in the study. Approximately 2,000 recipients will have been included by the end of the fieldwork. Analyses of food group consumption frequencies will be presented in September based on individual characteristics and types of food assistance. Discussion/conclusion.- The results of the Abena-2 study will help update our understanding of the needs of people relying on food assistance and formulate proposals for improving food assistance in France, particularly through the Food and Integration Plan.
