Adults’ Awareness of Two New Recommendations on Pulses and Whole-Grain Products: Results from the 2021 Santé publique France Health Barometer
Introduction – Dietary fiber has proven health benefits, but consumption levels in France are far too low. Since 2019, following the example of the "5 fruits and vegetables a day" campaign, two additional dietary recommendations have been promoted to the general public to encourage greater consumption of fiber-rich foods (whole grains and legumes). This article presents adults’ levels of awareness of these dietary recommendations, as well as the frequency of consumption in line with these recommendations, which have never been assessed before. Potential sociodemographic factors influencing knowledge and the associations between knowledge and consumption are also explored. Method – The data used come from a subsample of the 2021 Baromètre Santé survey, conducted by telephone among a random sample of 24,514 adults aged 18–85 residing in mainland France. This subsample of 4,542 adults aged 18 to 75 had responded to a specific questionnaire regarding knowledge of dietary recommendations and consumption patterns related to whole grains and legumes, as well as those related to fruits and vegetables. The association between sociodemographic characteristics and knowledge of these recommendations, and the association between this knowledge and consumption levels consistent with the recommendations, were investigated using multivariate logistic regressions.
