Carbon monoxide

Colorless, odorless, tasteless, and non-irritating, carbon monoxide (CO) is an imperceptible toxic gas. It is the cause of many cases of poisoning during the winter months.

Our missions

  • Coordinate the surveillance system

  • Monitoring epidemiological trends in carbon monoxide poisoning

  • Identify risk factors and adapt preventive measures

  • Preventing the risk of poisoning among the general public

How can you reduce the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning?

To reduce the risks of carbon monoxide poisoning, Santé publique France recommends:

  • Before each winter, have heating and hot water systems and flue ducts systematically inspected and maintained by a qualified professional;

  • Ventilate rooms for at least ten minutes every day, keep ventilation systems in good working order, and never block air inlets or outlets;

  • Follow the operating instructions for combustion appliances: never run space heaters continuously;

  • Always place generators outside buildings; never use appliances not intended for heating purposes, such as stoves, braziers, or barbecues, for heating.
