Asthma Related to the Start of the School Year. Newsletter, September 10, 2024.
Key Points
In the Indian Ocean region, following an increase in Week 35, the number of emergency room visits for asthma among children under 15 remains stable (third week of school in Réunion) compared to Week 35 (96 vs. 86 visits in Week 35). The proportion of cases (8.6%) also remains stable and lower than that observed last year.
Nationally, during the week of the school year’s start, asthma-related visits among children under 15 increased significantly compared to Week 35, both in emergency departments (+98%, or +1,104 visits) and within the SOS Médecins network (+75%, or +184 procedures). These increases follow the same trend as in previous years.
The share of activity in emergency departments (3.4% of all visits) and within the SOS Médecins network (2.2% of all procedures) is also on the rise, but remains at a level comparable to that of previous years. The same is true for the proportion of hospitalizations following an emergency department visit for asthma (rising from 28% in S35 to 35% in S36).
