Psychosocial factors and health.

Drawing on studies from other countries (Sweden, the United Kingdom, and the United States), this article presents an approach to the epidemiology of cardiovascular disease in the workplace, expanded to include psychosocial factors. These studies demonstrate the role of social connections, quality of life, autonomy at work, and the ability to manage occupational stress in health inequalities. Social integration is the key factor for survival following heart disease and for return to work. The issue of the validity of the numerous questionnaires developed to assess quality of life is raised.
