Awareness of stroke and its symptoms in France in 2019
Introduction - The objective was to examine awareness of stroke and its symptoms among a sample of the French population. Method - We used data from the 2019 Santé publique France Health Barometer, in which 5,074 people aged 18 to 85 and residing in metropolitan France were surveyed about stroke. The survey method was based on the random generation of landline and mobile phone numbers. The analyses were weighted and then adjusted for the characteristics of the general French population based on the 2018 Labor Force Survey by the National Institute of Statistics and Economic Studies (INSEE). Results - In 2019, more than 40% of people believed that a stroke affected only the heart, or both the heart and the brain; one in five did not know that a stroke could occur at any age; and one in two was unaware that effective treatments existed. Furthermore, 53% of people said they feared stroke, particularly women (58%). Regarding knowledge of stroke symptoms, “difficulty speaking” was the most widely recognized symptom, identified by 94% of participants. "Paralysis of an arm or leg" and "a drooping mouth" were recognized by more than 90% of respondents, respectively. Finally, 83% of the population listed all three symptoms simultaneously, demonstrating a good understanding of stroke symptoms. Lack of awareness of the symptoms was, all else being equal, higher among men, those under 45 and over 65, people with an educational level below a high school diploma, those with no history of stroke, and smokers. Conclusion - Awareness of stroke symptoms was high and has improved compared to previous studies dating back to 2013. This underscores the importance of public awareness campaigns.
