Ebola Virus – Epidemiological Update for West Africa as of October 6, 2014.

Highlights

  • A total of 7,491 cases (suspected, probable, and confirmed) and 3,439 deaths (case fatality rate 45.9%) have been reported in five West African countries (Guinea, Sierra Leone, Liberia, Nigeria, and Senegal).

  • The outbreak is generally spreading in the three countries initially affected by Ebola virus disease (week 40). However, the trend varies by country.

  • The WHO notes that there is significant underreporting in the various areas affected by the outbreak. The reported situation is therefore likely underestimated.

  • No new cases were reported in Nigeria and Senegal during this week.
