Ebola Virus – Epidemiological Update for West Africa as of March 9, 2015.
Highlights
The World Health Organization reports a total of 24,014 cases (suspected, probable, and confirmed) and 9,840 deaths in the three currently affected countries in West Africa (Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone) as of March 6, 2015.
In Liberia, for the first time since the week of May 26, 2014, no new confirmed cases have been reported in the country. In Guinea and Sierra Leone, the number of new cases is increasing compared to the previous week (N=51 versus 35 the previous week for Guinea and N=81 versus 63 the previous week for Sierra Leone). In both countries, however, the number of new cases per week remains well below that observed in the second half of 2014.
In Guinea, pockets of resistance are observed, particularly in Lower Guinea. Furthermore, security-related incidents have been reported in four out of 34 prefectures (compared to 10 the previous week).
Transmission remains active in the capitals of Conakry and Freetown.
