Preliminary results from the new HIV surveillance system and the status of the AIDS epidemic as of September 30, 2003

Mandatory reporting of new HIV diagnoses, combined with virological surveillance of recent infections and circulating subtypes, was therefore implemented in March 2003 to gain a better understanding of the HIV-positive population and to track the dynamics of HIV infection, with the aim of better tailoring prevention efforts. This article provides an initial assessment of mandatory HIV reporting and virological surveillance, as well as AIDS surveillance data through September 30, 2003. Information sheets for patients regarding "Mandatory Reporting of HIV Infection" and "Virological Surveillance of HIV Infection" are presented.
