Epidemiology of HIV infection worldwide and in France

In 2005, 40 million people worldwide were living with HIV, and 3 million died from the disease. The majority live in sub-Saharan Africa or Asia, and half are women. In France, nearly 7,000 new HIV diagnoses were recorded in 2004, primarily among gay men who had become less vigilant about prevention and among heterosexuals from sub-Saharan Africa, who are often diagnosed at an advanced stage of the disease.
