Routine screening for syphilis at 7 health screening centers in 1993
The low seroprevalence of syphilis among the population visiting these health screening centers supports the decision, made in 1994, to discontinue routine screening during periodic health checkups. The results of this study do not support continuing the test for those aged 25–59 but draw attention to the lack of awareness of syphilis among young people. After evaluation, expanded screening for other STDs among those under 30 could usefully enhance the periodic health examination. (R. A.).
