National Survey of General Councils on Diagnosed Gonococcal Infections, Metropolitan France, 2001 and 2002

The General Councils are responsible for combating sexually transmitted diseases and provide free treatment for these infections in public healthcare facilities such as venereal disease clinics. Following the resurgence of gonococcal infections observed in the Rénago network between 1997 and 1999, a survey was conducted in 2000 across 20 French departments on the number of gonococcal infections diagnosed in venereal disease clinics. The results of this survey confirmed the observed increase in gonococcal infections. While a downward trend in gonococcal infections emerged in 2001 and 2002 within the Rénago network, a new survey of healthcare facilities under the jurisdiction of the General Councils was conducted in 2003 to assess the number of gonococcal infections diagnosed in these facilities for the years 2001 and 2002.
